A new restaurant terrace on Brighton beach

This project concerned a commercial premises, leased from Brighton & Hove City Council and located in the historic arches on Brighton seafront within the Seafront Conservation Area.

The proprietors of the licensed café restaurant wanted to create an enclosed terrace on the pebbled beach in front of the restaurant.

Following consultation with the heritage team and the council’s seafront surveyor, Cath created a design and obtained planning approval for a terrace built onto the beach. The new terrace has disabled access from the promenade and is enclosed with a recycled wood windbreak and built-in seating that can withstand high tides and storm conditions, while also meeting the constraints of development in the conservation area.

The terrace provides ample additional seating for the restaurant, with the bonus of an excellent view.
